Notes from the Vineyard – August 2025
Welcome to the first update from Saints Way Wines — and thank you for being here at the beginning of our journey. Whether you discovered us on a walk along the footpath, joined a tasting, or simply followed your curiosity, we’re so pleased to have you with us as we launch our website and begin sharing more of what’s happening here at Trenant.
It’s been a busy few weeks across the vineyard and orchard. With the sun high and rainfall low, much of our time has been spent tending to the young vines — all 16,000 of them. To give them the best possible start, we’ve been carefully cutting back weeds by hand to reduce competition for water and nutrients. It’s slow, satisfying work, and part of our commitment to managing the land without unnecessary chemicals.
We’ve also been watering regularly and enriching the soil with organic fertiliser. A new demonstration row has been planted too, showcasing all our grape varieties side by side — a small but exciting step in making the vineyard more visitor-friendly.
Over in the orchard, the apples are coming on well. With luck (and a little rain), we’ll have another strong harvest in September. We’re especially looking forward to seeing what comes from the younger trees planted three years ago, which should bear fruit for the first time this year — we have lots of local Cornish varieties that we’re eager to try.
Nature continues to play a big part in our plans. Almost 30 Indian Runner ducklings have hatched this season and are maturing well. Alongside our growing flock of chickens, they’ll help us manage pests naturally — all while adding their own touch of charm to the place.
We’re also delighted to welcome Andy to the team as our new full-time groundskeeper and gardener. A true plantsman with years of experience in establishing and managing landscapes, he’s proven to be a great asset in the vineyard and is already making plans for a kitchen garden for next year.
Thank you again for being part of this from the start. We’re so grateful for your support and look forward to sharing the seasons with you as the vineyard grows.
