Notes from the Vineyard - January 2026
January has certainly lived up to its reputation this year. Much of the month has been marked by heavy rain and unsettled weather, leaving the ground thoroughly soaked and the valley running full.
Early in the month, large parts of Cornwall were placed under a red weather warning for wind, with the official guidance warning of potential danger to life. Fortunately, we came through the storm here at Trenant without any significant damage, which was a great relief.
Despite the challenging conditions, winter work has continued whenever the weather allowed. Much of our focus has been on mulching the orchard trees, using wood chip produced on the farm itself. This helps protect the soil, retain moisture, and support the young trees that have been planted over the past few years. With more than 800 apple trees now established, this ongoing care is an important investment in the seasons ahead.
Winter can appear quiet on the surface, but it is an important time for steady work and preparation. Beneath the grey skies, the land is resting and gathering strength for the year to come.
